Karapitiya Trail cancer Hospital

In 2016, Colours of Courage Trust launched Trail once again, walking 670 km from Point Pedro to Dondra Head over 28 days to raise US$6 million for the Karapitiya Trail Cancer Hospital in Galle, expanding access to cancer care in Southern Sri Lanka.

‘Trail 2016’ was testimony to the power of people coming together to bring about change joined by over 2.5 million people from various communities across Sri Lanka we received support through donations and in kind and have raised over LKR 800 million. We continue to fundraise LKR 2.6 billion to build a 10-storey treatment center complete with 160-bed adult wards, a paediatric ward, MRI and CT scanning facilities, bone marrow transplant unit, operating theatres, surgical ICU, out-patient facilities and an auditorium

However, the journey to realizing this vision has not been without significant challenges. Delays in governmental approvals, funding constraints, the COVID-19 pandemic, and Sri Lanka’s economic crisis contributed to repeated delays in construction and project implementation. With strong support from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Defense, and the Sri Lanka Army, the project regained momentum, and Phase Two of construction officially recommenced in 2025.

Current Progress

Construction of the Karapitiya Trail Cancer Hospital is progressing as an extension of the existing cancer care facilities at Teaching Hospital Karapitiya, Galle. The first six floors of the 10-storey structure have been completed, marking a significant milestone in the project.Colours of Courage Trust is working towards completing the full superstructure by February 2027, with the hospital targeted for completion by the end of 2027.
